Stacker and the Tabernacle  2001 – 02

The installation was a storyboard for a planned video, Stacker and the Tabernacle.  Reg Bowcock was to be my Stacker.  The installation included two videos of Reg, an interview in which he spoke of his passion, breeding and showing Canaries and a slow motion “portrait” extracted from it, shown as a large screen projection (short clip above).  Reg, in his mid 80s, was still a strong man, richly experienced and reflective, qualities which made him the ideal Stacker.  But after suffering a series of small strokes he was unable to take part.  I have not yet found anyone to replace him.  Reg, a kind and mild man, was modest about his achievements.  In the 1930s he played football for Stoke, his home town, with the legendary Stanley Matthews.  He was trained as an assault trooper and was in action in North Africa, Anzio and ended the war confronting the Russians in Berlin.  He returned to professional football and then worked as a plasterer, which is how I met him.   Tabernacle . . .
